Is Masood Azhar Alive? Uncertainty Surrounds JeM Chief’s Fate After Operation Sindoor

Date: May 7, 2025

In the wake of India’s Operation Sindoor—an extensive military campaign targeting terrorist infrastructure across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir—questions arise regarding the fate of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief, Maulana Masood Azhar. While Azhar has publicly acknowledged the deaths of ten family members and four close aides in the strikes, his own status remains unconfirmed.

The Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025, in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 28 civilian lives. The operation targeted nine locations, including JeM’s headquarters at Jamia Masjid Subhan Allah in Bahawalpur, a known hub for the group. Azhar reported that among the deceased were his elder sister, her husband, a nephew and his wife, another niece, and five children from his extended family.

Despite these admissions, there has been no official confirmation regarding Azhar’s own whereabouts or condition. Indian defense sources have remained silent on the matter, and Pakistani authorities have not provided any statements concerning Azhar’s status.

The ambiguity surrounding Azhar’s fate has led to widespread speculation. Some analysts suggest that he may have been killed in the strikes, given the targeted nature of the operation. Others posit that he might have survived and is currently in hiding.

The uncertainty is further compounded by the broader geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan. Pakistan has condemned the strikes as an act of aggression, reporting civilian casualties and vowing retaliation. India maintains that the operation targeted terrorist infrastructure and was a necessary response to prevent further attacks.

As both nations navigate the aftermath of Operation Sindoor, the ambiguity surrounding Masood Azhar’s status adds another layer of complexity to the already volatile situation. Observers await official statements that could confirm his fate and potentially influence the trajectory of India-Pakistan relations in the coming days.
